Hi all, it’s Courtney. Did you know that certain times in your cycle, and how your hormones are functioning (or not functioning) can be having an impact on how your pelvic floor behaves, or even throughout your body?
Today we are going to talk about a few hormones that can impact the connective tissue and ligaments throughout our entire body (including our pelvic floor) and what that can look like.
- Estrogen
- Relaxin
- Aldosterone
- Cortisol
- Adrenaline
One thing you may not know about these hormones is that they can all cause some sort of ligament laxity in the body, yes that still includes the pelvic floor, too.
Most of us have maybe heard about ligament laxity during pregnancy because of that lovely Relaxin hormone that is produced to help adapt to your growing body, but also to help you when your pelvis needs to be able to open for you to deliver your baby. However, did you know that we not only produce Relaxin during our regular cycle, but there are several other hormones that can also cause this ligament laxity.
Have you at certain times in your cycle felt like you have a flare up, or feel out of alignment? Maybe some of your pelvic floor issues creep back in? Sometimes these can be hints that these hormonal changes are happening. It can be helpful to track these symptoms if you already use a period tracker app. That way if you notice it becoming a problem you can decide if it may be time to talk to your doctor and see if they might need to take a closer look at how your hormones are functioning. We know that things like pregnancy, postpartum, and stress alone are enough for hormones to sometimes get disrupted and cause trouble.
These reasons alone make it even more important to either get in to be evaluated for Pelvic PT if you never have been yet, get back in for a check-up, or keep up with your Home Program to help strengthen the muscles in your body to help support the ligaments/connective tissue if it is having these shifts.
It’s no secret that stress is not good for our bodies and is a huge reason why ANY dis-ease can happen in the body – and I think we have had ENOUGH of that the past 2 years, am I right? Our nervous systems were, maybe still are, on high alert for a LONG-sustained period of time, every single one of us, and we’re just supposed to go back to living our normal lives as if nothing happened…you think our nervous system was ready for that?? Have any of you noticed your anxiety ramped up still? We could all learn to take some time to slow down our breath a little to help it catch up. Our absolutely free tool that we have control over when it can sometimes feel like we can’t control anything else, we can control our breath, and can use at any time. If you haven’t been taught Hum and Swallow Breathing yet, let’s get your started with this video:
