So Kaylen’s message last week got me thinking about my favorite advice to give expecting or new mamas.
I, too, used to prefer black and white and “knowing” the right answer. Looking back, that seems laughable, especially when it comes to parenting. Now that I have been thru life with teenagers, I can assure you it’s laughable!
My favorite advice is – There are dozens of right ways to do things.
I remember being so excited to go create our baby registry. After all, the wedding one had been so fun, scanning all those beautiful things with the little radar gun thing – yes I’ve been married forever and that’s how you used to do it.
Well the second we walked into Babies R Us, my heart dropped and I was instantly overwhelmed. So many choices, products I didn’t even know existed and wasn’t sure how to use. Anyone relate?

Now 2 of those say right on the pictures what they are but they weren’t around when I had kids. Do you recognize the first one?
It’s a sound machine.

Some things might be considered luxury items, such as multiple breast pumps or fancy trash cans, weighted wipes container (honestly genius for grabbing one handed) or a wipes warmer (don’t get that – they just dry out).
Some items you might use once and decide it was a waste and others might be lifesavers you use multiple times per week.
Diapers – cloth or disposable
Co-sleep, bassinet or crib in own room
Bottle, breast or combo
Breast milk or formula or combo
Pacifier or not
Baby wearing or floor time
Vaccines or not
When to start foods
The bottom line is that there are millions of decisions, all with multiple options and each baby and family scenario is different. What works with one of your babies may not be a good fit for the next one.
So where do we land for all this?
❤️Know that there are lots of right choices and give yourself grace as you figure it out, often by trial and error
🤑Don’t buy a bunch of things before baby’s arrival. Especially now that we have amazon, wait and see if you need something.
😁To quote Tony Robbins – “The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can comfortably live with.” Try to remove the pressure to have it figured out. I remember my mom telling me that about the time you have something figured out – their schedule, their likes – it changes.
There are lots of right ways to do things so here is your official permission slip to try things and CHANGE YOUR MIND and try something else.🤯
We’d love to hear your favorite products or things that you were surprised you DID need or something you thought would be CLUTCH but didn’t end up using!
All our blessings on a lifetime of decisions😍We’re always here to help but you know yourself and your baby best – Get a village but then trust yourself!
