Amy here and it’s time to get into it!

Having a menstrual cycle is truly a super power. We as women have this process that naturally detoxes our bodies monthly. We are often told only about the negative aspects with cramping, bloating, bleeding and pain.

Let’s look at a few other facts because there is a lot of info that falls under “normal”.

  • Most women have a cycle between 24-38 days
  • It lasts 4-8 days
  • 50% of women crave chocolate or sweets
  • 32-40% have symptoms so severe they miss school or work according to a 2012 PubMed research article

Now let’s look at some things that are NOT true – you guys know I love some good mythbusting!

Some other information that needs to be known as myth:

  • Birth control can balance period symptoms
  • Your period only sheds the unused lining from your uterus
  • Nutrition has nothing to do with our periods

Now for some FACTS!

  • Birth control can control a woman’s menstrual cycle, which can make it difficult to identify typical PCOS symptoms like irregular bleeding.
  • Birth control can increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and blood clotting.
  • Birth control can worsen insulin sensitivity, but this effect may be modified by obesity.
  • Birth control can affect lipid levels, such as decreasing high-density lipoprotein and increasing triglyceride levels.
  • Birth control pills can cause hormonal imbalances because synthetic hormones may bind to the wrong receptors.

Birth control also often prevents a woman from having a full menstrual cycle and bleeding which not only sheds our lining but is a major detox process for ridding our bodies of so many of the harmful chemicals we’re exposed to environmentally as well as in so many products we put in and around our body. Now lean in – I am NOT saying that are menstrual blood is naturally full of toxins – that is not true. It just can help to rid the body of toxins via our blood.

There is also a lot of power in knowing our cycle, understanding our fertility, recognizing rhythms in our energy, prime time for workouts, optimal times for fasting or nutrition needs.

But more on that later – or if you’re truly chomping at the bit, check out Fast Like A Girl by Dr. Mindy Pelz. Anyway – that’s probably more than enough – if you read this far, hope you found it worth it!

Many blessings,

Amy and the MOT team!
