Ever notice how often you “should” all over yourself?
Hey all – Amy here and for the next 4-6 weeks, we are going to be talking about many topics around women’s health and the transitions from 30s into 50s through the lovely phase of perimenopause and menopause.
I am personally on this journey having just celebrated my 49th birthday!🎉
I spend most of my days talking to women of all ages and one thing we have in common is the extensive degree to which we should all over ourselves – all day – about SOOOOO many things.Â
On thing that often happens right around 40 is a delightful phenomenon where we run out of Fs to give – like POOF! One day they are gone and it is extremely liberating. I often encourage younger women to embrace this earlier! Hopefully you know by now how passionate I am about wanting women to know and understand their own bodies so they feel empowered to make the best choices for their own health – there is no 1 size-fits-all program or recipe for thriving but it IS available to everyone.
So let’s take a little quiz on SHOULDS.
Do you ever say:
- I SHOULD care more about sex with my partner
- I SHOULD be skinnier
- I SHOULD do this or that for and with my children
- I SHOULD really get more sleep
- I SHOULD exercise more
- I SHOULD be able to have energy all day
- I SHOULD be able to lose weight since I gave up carbs
The list goes on and on, right?
Click below for a brief video from me on orgasms in this season of transitions.
So what do we do about all of these shoulds?
Whatever particular phase you are in, get to know your own body. This will likely look different for each of you. You can’t change what you aren’t aware of so we have to start with increased awareness. Please reply with any questions about where you specifically should start!
Even what doctors and providers are being taught TODAY is old and outdated and often based on men. Women have long been considered too complicated due to our hormones and pregnancies which present too many variables for “good research” and since we are basically just smaller version of men, the same conclusion should apply, right?
WRONG!
I’ve linked below a great podcast where Dr. Mary Claire Haver, an expert on menopause, has a great conversation with Brene Brown on many of the thinks I discuss with clients all day.
My easiest, most foundational advice is this.
- Get to know your own anatomy
- Get some information about your current health in terms of bloodwork, hormone levels, BMI, blood sugar levels.
- Take some time to consider how you’re truly feeling and how you’d like to feel. It’s easier to close that gap when you know what you want.
Depending on where you’re at, finding a good provider to order some bloodwork might be next step, getting a pelvic floor eval to know more about your own anatomy and what’s common versus normal. Have a listen to the podcast then reach out if you need more resources for taking YOUR next step!
We’re here for you – to help you run out of Fs, to help you know your body and to help you embrace the super power of being a woman, hormones, menstruation, libido and ALL!
Much love and health,
Amy and the MOT team!
